UN atomic watchdog begins key talks on Iran   (26/11/2009)

The UN atomic watchdog convened for a two-day meeting Thursday to debate a possible censure of Iran over its controversial nuclear activities and its refusal to accept a compromise uranium supply deal.

The 35-member board of governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency began two days of deliberations covering a range of topics, including North Korea, Syria and a Russian proposal for a fuel bank.

But Iran was set to dominate following the revelation of a hitherto covert uranium enrichment plant at Fordo, near the holy city of Qom, and Tehran's failure until now to agree to a uranium enrichement deal aimed at building confidence in the peaceful nature of Iran's nuclear activities.

The meeting will be the last under the leadership of Egyptian diplomat Mohamed El Baradei, who steps down as IAEA Director General on November 30 after 1 2 years in office.
