Football: Rangers, AEK Athens win games in Sydney tournament   (25/7/2010)

Scottish champions Glasgow Rangers and AEK Athens won their opening matches in the Sydney international pre-season tournament on Sunday.

Rangers beat English Premier League club Blackburn Rovers 2-1, while 11-time Greek champions AEK Athens outclassed hosts Sydney FC 5-3.


Goals for American midfielder Maurice Edu and veteran striker Kenny Miller put Rangers up 2-0 at halftime before David Dunn pulled one back for Rovers with a second-half penalty.


AEK Athens' superiority shone through against Sydney FC with Brazilian Leonardo, Argentines Ignacio Scocco and Ismael Blanco, Nikos Liberopoulos and Pantelis Kafes finding the net for the near full-strength side.


Sydney's goals came from an Alex Brosque double and one for Senegalese triallist Ibrahima Thiam.


In Wednesday's next round of games, AEK Athens play Blackburn Rovers and Sydney FC take on Glasgow Rangers.
